About Digital ID
The Digital ID initiative is a cornerstone of Australia’s push toward a more secure, seamless, and modern digital landscape. It is designed to simplify how Australians prove their identity online while ensuring safety, privacy, and accessibility. Whether accessing government services, applying for jobs, or conducting financial transactions, Digital ID provides a trusted way to verify your identity.
The Digital ID initiative is a collaborative effort between government agencies, private sector partners, and the Australian public. Government agencies lead the development and regulation of the framework, while private sector partners integrate Digital ID into their platforms. The Australian public plays a vital role in shaping the initiative through feedback and user testing. Together, policymakers, developers, and service providers work to create a secure, user-friendly system that meets the needs of all Australians.
The Australian Government Digital ID System (AGDIS) is delivered and supported by six agencies. They are:
- Department of Finance
- The Office of the System Administrator
- Services Australia
- The Australia Competition and Consumer Commission
- The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner
- The Data Standards Body (DSB)
- Australian Taxation Office

Our role as the Data Standards Body
Section 99 of the Digital ID Act 2024 states that the Digital ID Data Standards Chair is responsible for developing and maintaining two sets of Digital ID Data Standards relating to:
- Identity Service Provider biometric testing and authentication requirements
- Technical integration requirements for entities to participate in the AGDIS.
The Digital ID Data Standards Chair is supported by the DSB who will also support participants through the publication of user experience (UX) guidance and technical references.
Consumer Experience team
The Consumer Experience (CX) team within the DSB produces UX guidance materials to help Digital ID participants create secure, intuitive, and trustworthy experiences. This comprehensive guidance has been developed through extensive consumer research, industry consultation, and collaboration with other Digital ID agencies. It provides practical examples of key requirements and recommendations for implementing best-practice Digital ID systems.
